The Facts About Therapy For Adhd   by Robert William Locke

Have you ever heard of the MTA study? It was organized by the NIMH (National Institute of Mental Health) and it tried to ascertain whether therapy for ADHD with prescription meds or a combination of behavior therapy plus medication was more affective.

Results were mixed but it was shown that combination treatments were giving better results in areas such as academic performance, defiant behavior and also in parent-child rapport.

One fact to consider is that there was another advantage in the combination therapy in that doses of the medicines could be reduced. There is so much controversy about these medicines that the FDA is often seen as sitting on the fence and not taking a strong enough stance on the warnings and the consequent health risks.

Another fact is that nobody knows or seems to care about the long term effects. Did you know that Adderall can be administered to children of three? Normally the age limit of these amphetamine drugs is set at six, but for some reason which defeats me, Adderall is allowed for three year olds!

That means it has been found to be safe and effective. What attention span and focus is a child of three supposed to have? Given all the other negative side effects such as insomnia, loss of weight and drowsiness, there must be a better therapy for ADHD.

As I mentioned above, the MTA study has been interpreted in various ways. William Pelham, who is a distinguished child psychologist has no doubt at all. Neither has Gregory Fabiano, winner of the White House Presidential Early Career Award.

Their work is based on almost 200 studies which have convinced them that ADHD behavior modification or behavior therapy is by far the best therapy for ADHD.

Parents then are one of the most important elements in the Adhd And therapy equation, not just the long suffering ADHD child who is frequently regarded as a problem. With behavior therapy, parents work with the child. Both parties know the limits and the child is taught how to cope and how to react to various situations. The parents’ response to behavior is of great importance as that very often determines how a child will react.

Each child will need different ADHD and therapy options and there are many things to consider. I know that combining behavior therapy with a homeopathic remedy which has no side effects is a great way to come to terms with the ADHD challenge. Why not find out what this involves and why it could really be the best therapy for ADHD.
